Celebrating Choice, Joy & Dignity: Our Summer Activities With the People We Support
At Independent Care Solutions, we believe every person deserves a life filled with choice, dignity, joy, and meaningful experiences. This summer, our team had the privilege of supporting one of the people we care for to enjoy a fully planned and person-centred outdoor activity day. The individual, who has autism, learning disabilities, and complex care needs, expressed a clear interest in spending more time outdoors — and our role was to make that wish safe, empowering, and enjoyable.
We began by exploring what mattered most to them: the type of outdoor spaces they enjoyed, how long they preferred to stay outside, their sensory needs, what helped them feel calm, and what could potentially trigger distress. By understanding their communication style and their likes and dislikes, we were able to build an activity plan that reflected their personality, preferences, and strengths. Their choices shaped everything — from the timing of the outing to the location, the sensory considerations, and the level of support required.
Due to their complex needs, the person uses a specialist, fully adapted vehicle and requires the support of more than two trained members of staff. Our team ensured that familiar staff accompanied them, as this helps build trust, promotes comfort, and reduces anxiety. Safety, dignity, and respect guided every part of the preparation. Risk assessments were carried out thoroughly, including reviewing early warning signs of distress, planning routes with quiet zones and shaded areas, and packing sensory tools, comfort items, and communication aids to ensure the day went smoothly.
Positive Behaviour Support was at the heart of the planning. We considered environmental triggers, reduced unpredictability by creating a flexible but structured schedule, and ensured the person had full control over choices such as where to sit, when to walk, when to take a break, and what activities they wanted to engage in. Our role was not to lead the day, but to support them to lead it themselves.
The outing was a beautiful success. The individual enjoyed walking through the park, exploring sensory textures, observing nature, sitting quietly on the grass, watching families from a comfortable distance, and relaxing in the fresh air. There were gentle smiles, moments of calm, engagement with surroundings, and visible expressions of joy. Our staff supported at a respectful distance, stepping in only when needed, and celebrating every moment of connection and expression. 🤎
This day highlighted the importance of respecting the rights, dignity, and freedoms of people with autism and learning disabilities. With the right planning, compassionate support, and thoughtful risk management, individuals with complex care needs can enjoy full access to community spaces and meaningful experiences that enrich their lives. Every person deserves the chance to enjoy nature, fresh air, and joyful days — and our team is committed to making that possible.
If you or someone you support requires complex care, autism-specialist support, or personalised community activities that genuinely uphold dignity, safety, and independence, we are here to help. We proudly support individuals, families, and professionals who want the best for those they care for. 🤎
